Regardless of how skilled you are in climbing a ladder and how well you follow the safety protocols, a faulty and damaged ladder can result in fatal accidents. It is inevitable that ladders wear out, get damaged, and weaken due to constant use, exposure to harsh conditions, or improper storage. This can result in the ladder becoming unsafe and dangerous for use, causing user falls and injury. This is why it is wise to schedule a regular ladder inspection to ensure the ladder is safe and in full working order.

What Should Be Given Importance During a Ladder Inspection?

Take a look at thisladder inspection checklist.

  • Labels: It is necessary that the labels display the model number, the name of the manufacturer, and the capacity of the load. The labels must be readable and should not be painted over or damaged.

  • Hinges and locks: These fittings should be in good working condition. Always ensure that the locking braces or spreaders are not loose, as this could cause the ladder to wobble and become unstable. Further, the ladder locks (dawgs) must not slip.

  • Visible defects or damage: Carefully inspect the ladder thoroughly for any visible damage or defects, such as missing parts, dents, bent rungs, or cracks.

  • Rungs and steps:Check each rung for signs of wear and tear or damage, such as splinters or cracks. There should be no mud, grease, or dirt to prevent possible slip/fall hazards. Further, identify if the other components, such as the side rope, rails, top caps, and pulley assembly of the extension ladder, are in working condition.

  • Stability: Check to see if all foot pads and foot assemblies are in good condition and are making solid contact with the ground. If the foot pads are damaged or missing, it can cause you to slip or lose balance and result in a fall.

Additional Points to Be Considered for Ladder Inspection

Here are a few more additional points that must be included in your ladder inspection checklist. Don’t forget to emphasise these important points!

  • Once you get to know that a ladder is faulty, never try to repair a ladder! Tag the ladder and remove the ladder from service instead of using wire, screws, bolts, duct tape, or electrical tape to fix any ladder. This can make the ladder more dangerous to use.
  • Always pay careful attention to the manufacturer's recommendations for proper ladder inspection and correct ladder usage.
  • Never use a step ladder that is in a folded position as an extension ladder!

How Often Should You Carry out a Ladder Inspection?

Ideally, ladder inspections should be carried out regularly before each use. In cases when the ladder is used frequently or exposed to harsh conditions, a ladder inspection must be performed more regularly. Regular tests and inspections of ladders and work equipment can significantly reduce the cost of time and unnecessary accidents. This will ensure the safety of the climber while working at great heights.
